Crohn's disease

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by transmural inflammation (which can affect the entire intestinal wall) and local lesions (areas of inflammation adjacent to normal areas).

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory disease of intestines and can affect any area of the gastrointestinal tract, from mouth year. That is, the symptoms of the disease vary from individual to individual.
The main gastrointestinal symptoms include:
abdominal pain
diarrhea (possibility of blood in the stools) or constipation
weight loss.

Crohn's disease, like many other chronic inflammatory disease, involves many systemic symptoms, such as:
growth disorders in children
fever
weight loss loss of appetite and malabsorption of carbohydrates or lipids.

In addition, Crohn's can affect other organs and systems, including:
Eye inflammation can affect both the inside of the eye (uveitis) and the white part (episcleritis). Both inflammation can lead to vision loss if not treated
Joints and muscles: spondiloartropatia seronegativa, arthritis, entes
Skin: erythema nodosa, pyoderma gangrenous
Blood: increased risk of blood clots, swelling to the calf that may be the sign of thrombosis, difficulty breathing that may indicate un'embolia, autoimmune hemolytic anemia; ipocratismo digital (at deformities of the fingers)
Bones: osteoporosis or bone thinning
Nervous system: seizures, stroke, myopathy, peripheral neuropathy, headache, depression

Many individuals suffering from Crohn's disease symptoms years before the disease is diagnosed. Generally, the onset is between 15 and 30 years of age. The symptoms are not always clear, and often acute periods alternate with periods of remission.

Among the possible complications of Crohn's disease are:
obstruction, fistulae, abscesses in intestine
increased risk of infection in cancer
malnutrition.

Although the cause of the disease is unknown, it is believed that Crohn's is linked to an autoimmune disease.
In addition, genetic and environmental factors (such as diets rich in sugars, fats and refined foods, smoking, oral contraceptive-based hormones) may be involved in the pathogenesis of the disease.

Unlike the main type of inflammatory disease of the intestine, ulcerative colitis, there is no known medical or surgical cure for Crohn's disease.
